7 Easy Ways to Make an Extra $500/month for your Travel Fund

Unless you are independently wealthy, have a high paying job, run a successful online business or have a job that pays you to travel, you basically have two options to increase your travel budget and save some additional travel money:

cutting expenses & generating additional income

In this report, we will explore 7 amazingly simple ways to make an additional $500 per month for your travel fund.

Ready? – then, here we go:

save travel money for your travel budget

#1 – Become a Local Tour Guide

Almost every town or region offers tours – and some major companies even offer tours of their facilities. You can usually work on weekends to create some part-time income without quitting your day job.

Contact your local tourism office or any tourist attractions in your area as a starting point.

You can also become an independent operator, advertise your services locally or online and make a nice extra pay-check that way.

Try to find a niche that is unique to you – that no one else offers – and tour offices and operators will be happy to work with you and send some business your way.

Chances are, if you are local, you know someone who knows someone who knows someone…..so getting started shouldn’t be too difficult.

Otherwise, create a nice looking flyer – or have a professional do it for you – and introduce yourself at local hotels and guest houses – as well as the local AirBnBs….

The internet has created even more options to get paid as a tour guide and meet some interesting people along the way. You can list yourself on these 4 sites and start making some extra travel money in no time:

Vayable

Rent-A-Guide

Advlo (Adventure)

AirBnB Experiences (formerly Trip4Real)

Having some prior tour guiding experience will also make it a lot easier to get tourism jobs abroad, which can be a great – and inexpensive way – to travel….

#2 – Local Pet Sitting

If you work full-time, you can offer over-night & weekend services that are usually high in demand. Pet owners frequently look for local house sitters to keep their pets company while they are away – and it pays very well (in California up to $70/ night!)

There is also the option to pet sit in your own home – see DogVacay.

Otherwise, Craigslist is a good way to connect – or put up an ad on local bulletin boards (supermarkets, libraries, coffee shops etc.).

EatWith

Eat At A Locals

#4 – Become a Tutor

In my Budget Travel (“Travel for FREE”) book, I am describing various online options for teaching languages (Chapter 2 “Get Paid to Travel”) and  other skills (Chapter 3 “Becoming a Digital Nomad”). You can also use them to create some additional travel money prior to your travels.

Check the listings and find a skill that has a high demand and is easy for you to do – and then start!

Here is a list of tutoring sites where you can list your services:

TUTORING

InstaEdu

Tutor Agent

.

#5 – Get a roommate or rent out a room on AirBnB

Obvious, yes – but I’m always amazed at how many people are still not considering this option – even when they are desperate for cash.

AirBnB has an excellent reference system in place, ensuring safety and pleasant experiences, so why not give it try? – you might actually make some new friends whom you can visit on your travels….

and…..you are building up references which will be important later when you want to stay with someone yourself…. (speaking of which – use this link to get $20 off your first AirBnB Booking)

You can also add your home to the following services and create even more income opportunities:

VRBO

HomeAway

Wimdu (City Apartments)

And….. if you have a garden or backyard – or large drive-way – try these:

CampSpace (formerly “CampInMyGarden.com”

RVwithMe

#6 – Rent out your car

Staying with the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) theme:  there has been quite a rise in P2P car rental services in recent years – and not just in the US, but many other countries worldwide.

Check the full list in the rental car chapter of my Budget Travel Book or google “Peer-to-Peer car rental (Your Country)”.

Like AirBnB, these services work with a reference system and also usually provide insurance.

In the US, several of these companies will even do the renting for you if you leave the car at the airport (free parking included) and even screen all renters’ driving records – also a great way to make extra money while you are traveling, by the way….

#7 – Become an UBER driver

Speaking of your car – becoming an UBER driver is another easy way to create some extra income with total time flexibility. You will need to pass a criminal background check and have a clean driving record – and then you are good to go.

Uber is awesome – is all I can say! – and with this link you can get your 1st Uber ride free.
